Would You Have Been a Nazi Supporter in 1939 Germany?

Recently resurfaced comments from Danielle Smith, the Premier of Alberta, Canada have raised an interesting point for introspection. Would you have supported Hitler’s Nazi party if you were alive in 1939?

Smith is currently engaged in an election battle for her province and has been forced to deal with backlash from a recently resurfaced video where she states that 75% of the population that supported COVID-19 mandates would most likely also be supporters of a tyrant like Hitler.

The comments were made in 2021 while she was a radio host and are now causing her problems. This topic is not altogether new, but it is interesting. Jordan Peterson on more than one occasion has expressed similar thoughts. Predictably, Smith has apologized and is attempting to move past these comments and focus on other issues.

But are her comments true? I would say yes. The fervor with which supporters of the mandates went after the unvaccinated proves the sentiment is true. The Canadian Prime Minister went so far as to call them racist and misogynists. Don Wilson in this particular tweet does a great job in showing how the unvaccinated were oppressed.

The only other instance that caused me to make a comparison to Nazi Germany was when Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem in the US. The ferocity with which people went after him left me no doubt that just about any normal ordinary person can be turned into a monster.

I believe in an inherit goodness that is at the heart of most people, but the capacity for evil or malevolence should never be understated. As more time passes it is becoming clearer that the events around COVID-19 were shrouded in deception and fear mongering. Project Veritas exposed nefarious motivations from Pfizer to use the virus to enrich themselves, there is abundant evidence that the virus was made in a Chinese Lab, and the Twitter Files reveal an orchestrated attempt by the government to silence diverse opinions that contradict the official narrative. When looking at all this information as a whole, it’s hard to deny that COVID-19 mandates were wrong and the government acted in a tyrannical manner. I understand that being compared to a Nazi supporter is not pleasant, but the similarities are certainly there.

Faced with this comparison, a supporter of the mandates has two options. They can either react emotionally and deny the government and media lied to them, or they can reflect on the process that convinced them to believe their lies. Nobody wants to admit they were fooled, but if we want to create a society that leads to better outcomes, this process must be understood.

Smith was not a politician in 2021, so she could speak freely. Now that she is she must undoubtedly tell the people what they want to hear, not what they need to hear. But what they want to hear might not be the best thing for them.
